Welcome to the York & District Squash League...

We exist to encourage the game of squash at all levels in the York area, and to organise local leagues and tournaments. Our sister organisation runs the women's leagues, with most of the same clubs entering both men's and women's teams.

We also support junior squash, which is actively developed by several of our affiliated clubs.

Riley Cup 2011/12 – updated 2nd April 2012

We’re at the semi-final stage with Railway 3 at home to David Lloyd 1, and York 3 at home to Railway 4.

The full draw for the 2011/12 Riley Cup is attached.

Just to remind you, matches are 5-a-side, with each string playing three games to 15 point-a-rally (PAR) scoring. At 14-all, there is no setting i.e. the first to 15 wins. Teams should play in merit order, although the usual league rules on playing up do not apply to the Riley Cup (within reason!).

York Vets 2012 – Paul Adams champion

Paul Adams (David Lloyd/York) beat Ray Burke (Wigginton) 3-1 (4-9, 9-3, 9-7, 10-8) in the final of the York Veterans Championship.

In what proved to be an excellent match, with both players showing great commitment and skill, it was Ray, pushing forward and taking the ball early, who took the opening game after Paul had raced into a 3-0 lead. The second game saw a change in fortunes as it was now Paul who was keeping Ray on the back foot.

He continued this form to go 5-0 ahead in the third before Ray again began to claw back the points, but the early deficit proved to be just too much as Paul closed out the game, 9-7.

The fourth proved to be the longest game of the match, 17 mins, again Paul took the early lead, 4-0, only for Ray to level at 5-5. There then followed several exchanges of points as both players made errors. However, Paul kept his concentration to squeeze home 10-8 in a match lasting a testing 53 minutes.

Many thanks to Rod Erridge for organising.

York Open 2012

The 2012 York Open champion is Neil Cordell, who beat last year’s winner Chris Rusling in an excellent final at a snowy Clifton Park on Saturday evening. Watched by a good crowd, Neil showed his customary strength and skill, but Chris made him fight to regain the tile he last won in 2009. It finished 3-0 (9/5, 9/1, 9/5), but was closer than the scoreline suggests.

In the Plate final, Marc Thomas beat Dan Adams 3-1 (9/0, 9/6, 7/9, 9/5).

Riley Cup

Stillington 3 are this year’s Riley Cup champions, overcoming a strong Selby 1/2 team in the final at Clifton Park.

Stillington are a perfect blend of youth and experience, and it was the older element which got them off to the best possible start with Mark Brogan winning a tight tussle with Alastair Rainier. The higher-ranked Selby team evened things up with a victory from Luke Murphy, but their fortunes didn’t improve from then on. Phil Theobold, Tom Howell and Callum Andrew were all able to take a game off their more illustrious opponents.

Selby finished 30 ahead, but that was well below the handicap of 65. Triumphant captain Duncan Cook is shown with his team below.

The individual scores were:

1. Simon O’Neill v Phil Theobold 15/11 15/10 11/15
2. Mal Holmes v Tom Howell 15/11 9/15 15/7
3. Mark Love v Callum Andrew 15/6 11/15 15/13
4. Luke Murphy v Duncan Cook 15/5 15/12 15/8
5. Alastair Rainier v Mark Brogan 11/15 12/15 14/5
